Windows 8 brings changes to Explorer

For me, Windows 8 is more of Microsoft’s make or break. Well, there is a lot that they have to do to get back their market share after losing so much in terms of mobile OS development as well as tablet OS. I’m one of the few people who still argue that this is not the end of desktops or the PC era, so basically I am looking forward to see what Windows 8 has to offer (although, it’s not like I’m going to switch back, I’m shall always stay at Ubuntu’s side).

It is rather good that Microsoft is documenting the development of Windows 8 on their blog, and I must say I am looking forward to the final product. Here is the latest development that has been released, which is the changes to Windows Explorer – the Windows File Manager that most people might have not realised its importance. This is Windows Explorer is their last release – Windows 7.

And this is the Windows Explorer that we would be seeing in Windows 8:

Yes, they have brought the Ribbon feature that is in Microsoft Office to Windows Explorer. Though some might find this slightly confusing, as Microsoft just dumped this whole bunch of features that they probably don’t want to see in front of their faces. But to be honest, this is great stuff. I’ve always been a fan of the Ribbon feature, and it does bring a whole lot of features that people don’t know existed to its users. They are also providing keyboard shortcuts for every command on the ribbon, which is something that would make the power users happy.

Lets take a closer look at the features on this Ribbon.

The Home Tab features all the common commands used by the user. Most of it are available on the right-click button but I think having it at the top of the ribbon is a very good idea. It makes things a whole lot easier.

The Share Tab allows users to well, share files with others. It makes it easier to zip files and email them to others. Users can also share them to other users on the same network.

This one is certainly an interesting feature. The View Tab allows users to customize the whole viewing experience. You can even add columns as well as preview pane and details pane. Showing or hiding file name extensions and hidden files are also one click away.

The Search Tab is made for all those people who always wanted to make more detailed searches on their PC. With more options on and a much better UI, searching should be a breeze.

The Picture Tab brings a few already existing options. I’m hoping to see more features placed here as they develop further.

And here is another one, which may actually make some users realise that there is such a thing called Cleanup. Sorry, for that but there are people who really don’t know.

So, basically this is something new to bring to Windows 8 and I think it shall be welcomed by most users. It may not be the cleanest interface for some but it certainly brings out all the features of explorer.

Oh, and just to add up, here is something I came across which I thought would be great on Windows 8.

For those who always had problems or were confused on which files to keep or replace, this is something you should look forward too. Now you get to choose for yourselves which files would you like to keep. Well thought of by the guys at the Windows 8 team.

Tell us what you think about these developments and before I forget Selamat Hari Raya and Eid Mubarak to all.
